SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking Bat Biologists to report to either our Pittsburgh, Chicago offices. This position will assist with conducting surveys for bats and other wildlife, including acoustic studies, mist-netting and radio-telemetry studies, and mortality monitoring, for a variety of projects in the central and eastern U.S. These positions may be regular or seasonal, hourly or salaried, with a minimum of 40 hours per week. Extensive travel may be required, as well as nighttime work. Lodging and travel expenses will be covered.
What you will accomplish:
Conduct surveys and collection of field data concerning bats and other species
Record data on field site forms or other forms
Use topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to determine exact locations of project areas, habitat types, and associated landforms
Drive 4WD vehicles in rugged terrain
May conduct biological data/literature searches and reviews
Photograph appropriate habitat, species, and landforms
Conduct habitat assessments and site characterization studies
Experience and qualifications for success:
Minimum of B.A. or B.S. in Biology, Ecology, Natural Resource Management, or a related field
Previous experience with bat survey techniques required
Must have demonstrated field experience with bat species of the eastern and central U.S.
Previous experience with Indiana bats preferred
Candidates must currently hold a Federal Fish and Wildlife Section 10(a)(1)(A) permit for listed bat species (e.g., Indiana bat, gray bat, big-eared bats, etc.)
Must have current rabies vaccination
Superb observation skills and the ability to record accurate field notes
Ability to conduct fieldwork for long hours in inclement weather conditions. Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day, often in rugged terrain. May have to carry equipment and/or supplies, weighing up to 40 pounds. Nighttime field work required.
